BACKFLOW PREVENTION
New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection has began a campaign to enforce the State requirements for backflow prevention devices. DEP inspectors are making the rounds and handing out notices requiring the installation of these devices in all buildings with the following: boilers that use chemical treatment; water-cooled equipment or chillers; commercial or public kitchens; laundries or dry cleaners; medical or dental offices; and many other types of commercial and residential properties.
The New York State Department of Health mandates that all water purveyors have a procedure in place to protect the public drinking water supply from contamination. As such, all facilities that are deemed as either aesthetically objectionable or hazardous require backflow protection. These devices must be properly surveyed, designed, filed, installed, tested and signed off. All primary devices require an annual integrity test by a NYS Dept. of Health certified Backflow Prevention Device Tester and a report of the test results be filed.
